James Summers, a longtime N.C. State football commitment, changed his mind on Thursday about his college future and now will play for North Carolina.
Summers, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback from Greensboro, made his change mostly because of the spread offense that UNC will run under Larry Fedora, its first-year coach. Summers ran a spread offense at Page High School as a senior in leading his team to a 15-0 record and the Class 4-AA state title.
Summers could not be reached by the Winston-Salem Journal to discuss his switch. Coach Kevin Gillespie of Page did not immediately return a message left on cell phone to discuss Summers' decision, but confirmed to the Greensboro News & Record that Summers is headed to Chapel Hill.
UNC's class built to 19 players, with the last five additions coming under Fedora, who was named coach on Dec. 9. Summers can sign the binding national letter of intent next month.
N.C. State's class dropped to 22 commitments.
Summers is the third high-school player to switch between UNC and N.C. State. N.C. State had previously added Bryce Kennedy, an offensive lineman from Southern Pines, and Desmond Owino, a defensive lineman from Raleigh, who had committed to UNC under the previous coaching staff led by Everett Withers.
Summers completed 93 of 186 passes as a senior for 1,506 yards. He threw 20 touchdown passes and was intercepted 11 times.
He rushed 185 times for 1,631 yards and scored 22 touchdowns. He had 247 yards rushing in the state title game. He has 4.7-second speed over 40 yards.
