As one football player from Royal Palm Beach High School in Florida walks out the door at Wake Forest, another is set to walk in.
Linebacker Teddy Matthews has committed to play for the Deacons, according to the Palm Beach Post. He is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior who was named all-area by the Post and received consideration for defensive player of the year among the big schools in the Post's circulation area.
Matthews will just miss playing with Brandon Pendergrass, a running back from Royal Palm Beach High who was the Deacons' leading rusher last season as a senior.
Matthews benefitted from a dramatic improvement in the fortunes of Royal Palm Beach, which vaulted from a one-win season in 2010 to a 7-4 record in Willie Bueno's first season as head coach. Matthews' previous offers were from Central Florida and Florida Atlantic.
Matthews also was a big reason for that improvement, as he piled up 102 tackles and six sacks and was a stalwart on a defense that allowed 20.2 points a game. He was honorable-mention all-conference and all-state.
Bueno could not be reached for comment Monday.
Oral commitments are non-binding. Players can start signing binding letters of intent Feb. 1.
