It will be back to normal business for Austin Trotman today, when Appalachian State resumes its Southern Conference wrestling schedule at The Citadel.
Trotman's most recent match was a bit out of the ordinary.
He became ASU's all-time leader in career victories with an 8-0 major decision against Ophir Bernstein of Brown in last weekend's Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.
It was Trotman's 115th career victory at ASU, topping Scott Irwin's record of 114 set in 2003-08.
"It wasn't a goal that I set for myself but it's pretty cool to have been able to do that," said Trotman, a fifth-year senior from Winston-Salem who has been ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation at 184 pounds this season.
He started wrestling as a freshman at Mount Tabor High School. He lost his first match.
"I went 3-8 that year," said Trotman, who went on to win two NCHSAA 4-A titles. "My sophomore year definitely went a lot better."
His career at ASU has certainly gone well.
Trotman has a 116-33 record, but he isn't far ahead of teammate Kyle Blevins in career wins. Blevins, a senior from Sapulpa, Okla., has 111 wins at ASU.
"We're very good friends, and it's great that we've both been able to have won as many matches as we have during the same time period," said Trotman, a two-time Southern Conference champion.
"It feels good to break a record, but now it's back to the goals I've set for myself."
This year's Southern Conference championships will be March 3 in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the NCAA championships will be March 15-17 in St. Louis.
