Wake Forest has reached into the ranks of professional football to fill one of its vacant assistant-coaching positions.
Jonathan Himebauch, hired in December as the offensive coordinator of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, has told the organization he will leave to join the Wake Forest staff, according to news accounts from Canada.
Steve Shutt, associate athletics director for media relations, said Wake Forest will announce the new coaches once they have been approved by the university. The program will hire two coaches to replace assistant coaches Tim Billings and Keith Henry, who were not retained after last season.
Scott Milanovich, a former quarterback at Maryland who is the Argonauts' head coach, has confirmed Himebauch will leave, but did not reveal his destination.
"When you hire good coaches, they are going to leave sometimes,'' Milanovich told the National Post of Toronto. "There were no surprises from his end or my end.
"I was genuinely excited that he has gotten this opportunity, and we will move on and hire someone to replace him.''
Himebauch, a starting center for Southern California in 1996 and 1997, spent the past three seasons as offensive-line coach with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.
He previously was offensive-line coach at San Diego State as well as an assistant at UNLV and Santa Barbara City College.
