Swimming seems like a natural fit for someone whose parents were in the Navy.
Not so for senior Shanon Slemons of Glenn.
"This is only my second year of competitive swimming," she said. "I've always enjoyed swimming with my friends during the summer, but that was always just for fun."
Slemons decided to try competitive swimming as a junior at the urging of her best friend and now teammate, Cassie Crippin.
"She just talked me into it," Slemons said. "I've always considered myself a competitive person; I just never really played any sports and wanted to give something a try. Swimming gives me a chance to compete both as an individual and in a team environment, and I've really enjoyed being a part of it."
Slemons competes in three relays and one individual event for the Bobcats, and she said her favorite race is the 100-yard freestyle.
She also swims legs on the 200-medley, 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle relay teams.
"She is someone we can count on," coach Ellen Hefner of Glenn said. "She comes to practice every day, works extremely hard and is motivated to improve. She has been a leader by example, and I am proud of her effort."
Slemons is an A/B honor-roll student and has been a member of the Latin Club and Art Club at Glenn.
She plans to enlist in the Army after graduation and eventually wants to become a dietician.
