One of the most stable coaching staffs in college football experienced a shakeup Wednesday when Wake Forest decided not to retain assistant coaches Keith Henry and Tim Billings.
Coach Jim Grobe said he felt a change was in order at a program that lost to Mississippi State in the Dec. 30 Music City Bowl to finish with a third-straight losing record.
Henry, who coached the Deacons’ special teams, has been an assistant to Grobe for 17 seasons, first joining Grobe’s staff at Ohio in 1995.
Billings, who coached the Deacons’ outside linebackers, joined the Wake Forest staff in 2006.
“I just think we need to make some changes,’’ Grobe said. “We’re just in a situation right now where it could be good for those guys to have new opportunities and it could be good for us get some new ideas, and things like that.’’
Grobe said neither Henry nor Billings were given the option of remaining on staff. He also said the decision was made by him, and not dictated by Athletics Director Ron Wellman or anyone else.
He also said no one specific incident led to the decision.
“After awhile, at times you just have to make changes,’’ Grobe said. “That’s the bottom line.’’
Grobe said there is no timetable to hiring the replacements for the two.
