The Citadel defeats Appalachian State

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Citadel ended Appalachian State's chances of landing a first-round bye for the Southern Conference tournament.

The slow-paced Bulldogs controlled the tempo Wednesday and led most of the way in a 62-51 victory at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C.

ASU trimmed an eight-point deficit to 39-35 midway through the second half, but missed on four straight possessions with a chance to close the gap further.

Lawrence Miller's 3-point goal with 3:54 left stretched the Bulldogs' lead to 48-41, and the Mountaineers never got closer than six thereafter.

The Bulldogs sealed the victory with free throws, hitting 11 of 13 in the final two minutes.

The loss dropped ASU to 12-16 overall and 7-10 in SoCon play. The Mountaineers could finish the regular season in a three-way tie for second place in the North Division, but they would lose a tiebreaker to determine the second and final bye available to North teams for the league's tournament in Asheville.

The Citadel, which beat Chattanooga 48-46 on Saturday to end an 11-game losing streak, improved to 6-22 and 3-14.

Mike Groselle led the Bulldogs with 18 points and eight rebounds. Bo Holston totaled 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Nathan Healy scored a career-high 19 points for ASU. Andre Williamson added 10 points and had a game-best 14 rebounds.

The Citadel, playing a deliberate pace, benefited from a 50 percent shooting performance from the field. The Mountaineers shot 36 percent and made 3 of 22 attempts (14 percent) from 3-point range.

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Mountaineers 36-26.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good with a 9-0 run in the first half, which boosted their lead to 19-14. The Mountaineers went 6:12 without scoring during that run, and the Bulldogs closed the first half with a 7-0 run for a 26-19 halftime lead.

ASU's first-half scoring total was its lowest since scoring 17 in the first half in a loss to East Carolina on Nov. 22.

The Mountaineers, who will finish the regular season without consecutive wins in SoCon play, will close the regular season Saturday at Western Carolina.
