UNC gets commitment from Albemarle lineman

Larry Fedora said that he could recruit when he was named North Carolina's football coach in December, and he proved his point again on Sunday.

R.J. Prince, one of the state's top high-school junior players, committed to UNC while on a visit to Chapel Hill to give Fedora his fourth addition for the Class of 2013.

Prince is a 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive lineman at Albemarle High School. He had been committed to Clemson, and had also been offered scholarships by N.C. State and South Carolina.

"Carolina is the place I would love to spend my four years in college," Prince said on Monday. "I thought long and hard about my future, and I thought Carolina would be best for me in terms of academics.

"I hope to go to the NFL, and I think I can get there with the help of all the coaches at Carolina."

Prince can sign the binding national letter of intent in February 2013.

Prince helped Albemarle go 13-2 last season and reach the semifinals of the Class 1-A state playoffs. He has 5.1-second speed over 40 yards. He was an all-conference selection.

Fedora's spread offense often will run plays every 15 seconds and Prince said that he welcomed the opportunity to play in an up-tempo system.

"I am so ready to play that way," he said. "I'm a good pass blocker. I can pick up the pass rush, and I can get the rushing defense, too. I can hold my own. I've been doing this for a good eight years now."

Prince has participated in track in the discus and the shot put. He played basketball this season but left the team about midway through the season after losing about 15-20 pounds. He is working to add back the weight for his senior football season.

After changing his commitment once, Prince said that his future is set.

"I'm sticking with Carolina," he said.
