Nick Crawford didn't join the swim team at Glenn until his junior year. He wishes he had started much sooner.
In only his second year in the program, Crawford saw his time in the 100 breaststroke drop from 1 minute, 33 seconds to 1:17.
"I wish I had started, like, my freshman year after seeing the improvement I have made," said Crawford, now a senior.
"He obviously wishes he would have started a lot sooner," coach Joanne Kiser said. "I don't think he realizes the potential he has, and he's definitely not had the time to develop it."
Unlike many swimmers at the high-school level, Crawford did not swim in the summer leagues when he was younger. He is glad he finally took the plunge and joined the Glenn team.
"Once you're part of a team, people there become like your family," Crawford said. "Everyone grows so close to where no one is left out. The coaches are really amazing."
Crawford did qualify for the NCHSAA regionals in the 400-freestyle relay but not in the 100 breaststroke.
When asked what makes Crawford a good swimmer, Kiser summed it up in one word.
"Effort," she said. "He works hard, and he is an excellent student."
Crawford, who plays the trumpet in the marching band and is a music fanatic, is planning to attend UNC Charlotte and wants to become a computer-hardware engineer.
And although he had a late start in swimming, Crawford said he would explore continuing his new sport in college.
"I'll be looking into that," he said.
