At 6-foot-6 and 194 pounds, Tyler Rose is the tallest member of the Calvary Baptist basketball team, but that doesn't mean he always plays in the post.
"He's a true wing guy, and that's where he'll play at the next level (college)," coach Joe Rybak said. "We try to play him as much as we can at where he's best."
Rose said he has drawn attention from Gardner-Webb, Yale, Lenoir-Rhyne and Milligan College, an NAIA school in Tennessee.
Rybak calls Rose "an all-around player" with a good mid-range jump shot who is adept at the 3-point shot, rebounding and shot-blocking.
"He's also our go-to guy," Rybak said. "When we need something, we'll set a play, and usually he'll make something happen."
Coach and player agree that Rose needs to work on his ballhandling, and Rose said that Rybak is trying to get him into the weight room.
"He's also a little tentative in the open floor sometimes, and his finish in traffic needs work," Rybak said.
Rose, a junior, said his best game was probably against Raleigh St. David's, when he scored 34 points and blocked four shots.
Rybak said Rose will only get better with experience.
"He has a lot of potential," Rybak said. "And I think he's still growing."
Rose played JV football as a freshman at North Stokes before transferring to Calvary for his sophomore year. He also plays first base for the Cougars' baseball team.
"I think the competition level is higher here," Rose said. "It's tough all around."
