North Carolina started its first full football recruiting year under coach Larry Fedora late Wednesday with two commitments for its class of 2013.
The two — running back Khris Francis (5-foot-9, 185) and defensive back Korrin Wiggins (6-1, 185) — are juniors at Durham Hillside High School, where they play for coach Antonio King. They committed while on campus for North Carolina's basketball game against Duke.
"I had discussed things with them before they went to the game last night," King said. "They already knew that's what they wanted to do, so we were all in agreement they would go ahead and commit."
The two can sign binding NCAA letters of intent in February 2013.
Francis rushed for 2,250 yards and scored 32 touchdowns last season. He started as a sophomore on Hillside's NCHSAA 4-A championship team in 2010 and has been on the varsity since his freshman season. He has been timed at 4.53 seconds in the 40.
"I would say he's an every-down runner," King said. "He runs hard and can do it all. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and he can run the short-yardage plays."
Wiggins had 80 tackles and six interceptions as a junior. He also started on Hillside's 2010 title team.
"He's one of the smartest players I've ever coached," King said. "He just really spends time understanding the game. He's capable of playing safety, corner and also the nickel back. He just has a great understanding of the game."
