Wrestling: Parkland will be going for its sixth straight state championship on Saturday after its NCHSAA Class 4-A quarterfinals and semifinals wins Thursday night.
Parkland (49-0) easily defeated visiting Southeast Guilford 56-15 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Drew Turner of Parkland won at the 120-pound weight class after pinning Jamie Wright in 56 seconds, which gave Parkland a 34-13 lead.
With only three weight classes left (126, 132, 138), coach Maurice Atwood of Parkland said he forfeited the last three matches because of the insurmountable lead.
Parkland will wrestle at home in Saturday's championship against Southern Pines Pinecrest at 7 p.m.
In Class 1-A, West Wilkes defeated Mitchell 42-21 in the semifinals.
West Wilkes (21-1) will wrestle Ayden-Grifton (39-4), which defeated Dixon 43-33, in Saturday's championship.
NCHSAA Class 3-A swimming: Lauren Rhodes of Charlotte Catholic turned in a dominant performance to win Most Valuable Performer honors, leading Catholic to its seventh straight girls team title Thursday in the NCHSAA Class 3-A swimming and diving championships in Cary.
Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won its third straight 3-A boys team title and fifth straight title overall.
Sava Turcanu of Hickory St. Stephens was a double winner in boys.
Turcano took first place in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races to win the MVP award.
Wilson Hunt's Shawn Hunter won both the 100 free and the 200 intermediate medley.
