Billups lost for season

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Clippers guard Chauncey Billups will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon during Los Angeles' 107-102 victory against the Magic in Orlando on Monday night.

The team said an MRI on Tuesday confirmed the injury.

Billups will return to Los Angeles on Thursday for further evaluation. The Clippers say a date for surgery hasn't been determined.

Billups, a five-time All-Star whom the Clippers claimed off waivers in December, was averaging 14.9 points and four assists in 30.4 minutes per game this season.

Critical goaltending was incorrect call

The NBA said a goaltending call in the final seconds of regulation in the Portland Trail Blazers' overtime loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night was incorrect.

Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge was called for goaltending on Kevin Durant's attempted layup with six seconds left. The call tied the game at 103 and it went to overtime, and the Blazers lost.

"With the benefit of slow-motion replay following the game, it has been determined that Aldridge made contact with the ball just before the ball hit the backboard. Therefore, this should have been ruled a good block and goaltending was the incorrect call," according to a statement posted Tuesday on NBA.com.

Referees cannot use instant replay on goaltending calls.

"The ref who called it was the farthest one from the basket, so that's pretty interesting," Aldridge said.

Bryant not charged in alleged church scuffle

City prosecutors won't file criminal charges against Kobe Bryant after reviewing allegations by a man who accused the Los Angeles Lakers star of injuring him during a scuffle at church.

The city attorney's office said there was insufficient evidence to prove charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police have said Bryant took the man's cellular phone in August, apparently thinking it was being used to take his picture during a Sunday service. The man went to a hospital for treatment of an injured wrist.

Knicks' Anthony out at least one week

The New York Knicks said they expect All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony to miss a week or two with a strained right groin.

Anthony was hurt Monday, leaving after six minutes of a 99-88 victory over Utah and continuing an injury-plagued season. He leads the Knicks with 22.3 points per game.

NUGGETS: Forward Danilo Gallinari is expected to miss a month with a severely sprained left ankle that turned out to be less serious than first feared.

Tests revealed the chip fracture in his left foot didn't occur Monday night against Houston. Doctors said it was from a prior injury, perhaps even before he joined the NBA.

HORNETS: The team requested waivers on guard Carldell Johnson and forward/guard DaJuan Summers. Both played in 15 games this season.

NEW FORMAT: The NBA will try a new format for the Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 24 in Orlando, Fla. The event, part of All-Star weekend, will feature teams comprised of rookies and sophomores. Rookies played against sophomores in the past.

TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal will serve as the general managers and conduct a draft Feb. 16.
