»  Comments | Post a Comment

Valorie Whiteside, one of the top players in the history of Appalachian State women's basketball, will return to Boone on Saturday as an honorary coach in the annual Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game.

ASU will play UNCG at 4:30 in the benefit game for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, named in honor of the late N.C. State coach.

Whiteside, a three-time All-America, ended her career as the leading scorer in ASU history (2,944 points) and is one of two former players whose numbers have been retired. She ranks No. 9 in NCAA history in career points and No. 7 in career average (25.4 ppg) and still holds 42 ASU records and nine Southern Conference records.

Whiteside ended her ASU career in 1988 and played professionally in Europe until 2003. She is currently in her first season as the girls basketball coach at Dorman High in Roebuck, S.C.
