NFL Notebook - Goodell: Changes must be considered for Pro Bowl

»  Comments | Post a Comment

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Sunday that he was disappointed in the quality of last week's Pro Bowl and that changes must be considered, perhaps even dropping the game altogether.

Speaking on ESPN Radio, Goodell said that the Pro Bowl wasn't "the kind of football we want to be demonstrating to our fans, and you heard it from the fans, the fans were actively booing in the stands."

Goodell has spoken to the NFL Players Association about the game, adding: "We are going to either have to improve the quality of what we are doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even consider eliminating the game if that is the kind of quality of game we are going to provide."

The AFC won 59-41.

Jersey weather forecast seems rosy … so far

It's still two years away, but there should be optimism that a cold-weather Super Bowl in northern New Jersey in 2014 won't be a frigid one — at least based on the past two years.

The weather at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Sunday was perfect for a Super Bowl: sunny, with temperatures about 40 degrees and almost no wind.

The weather was even better last year — sunny, with a high of 46 and winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 miles an hour. And that was during one of the worst winters in the New York metropolitan area.

League owners voted in May 2010 to play the title game in 2014 in the $1.6 billion stadium co-owned by the New York Jets and New York Giants, setting up the first outdoor title game at a northern site.

The coldest kickoff temperature in Super Bowl history is 39 degrees at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans in 1972, when Dallas defeated Miami 24-3. It has been at least 57 degrees for every outdoor Super Bowl since 1975, when it was 46.

Business side of NFL hits Patriots' Underwood

There was no Super Bowl for Tiquan Underwood, a seldom used wide receiver who was cut on the eve of the title game to make room for defensive end Alex Silvestro, who was signed from the practice squad.

Underwood, 24, seemed to be handling his release well, writing on Twitter: "Im Fine, This Will Only Make Me Stronger. Tough Times Never Last But Tough Ppl Do."

The Patriots signed Underwood on Aug. 29 after he was released by Jacksonville.

They released, signed and released him again before he rejoined them on Nov. 24. In five regular-season games he had three receptions but had none in two playoff games.
