Through the ordeal of his last year, Kevin Jordan always envisioned he'd be where he was Tuesday, playing baseball for Wake Forest at the first practice of the fall season.
He was asked if he used the thought as motivation.
"Yeah, I did," Jordan said. "And right now, I'm thinking about scrimmages, and after the first scrimmage I'll be thinking about playing against another team. Those goals fly by fast."
It was only eight months ago that Jordan was concerned only with surviving a kidney transplant to save his life. His donor was Tom Walter, Wake Forest's coach.
Jordan, a freshman who missed last season while on dialysis, returned home to Columbus, Ga., to recuperate. Not long afterward, Walter returned to coach his team in the 2010 regular season.
Jordan said he felt good after Tuesday's workout, considering it was the first practice of the season. Walter said that Jordan was fit enough to twice run the 60-yard dash in 6.5 seconds, the fastest time on the team.
Regardless of what happens during the rest of his career, the Kevin Jordan story is already an unbridled success.
"This is the best day of my coaching career," Walter said. "I mean by far. Just to see him back out here doing what he loves to do.
"And that is what this has always been all about."
