James Madison scored twice in the first half and knocked Wake Forest out of the NCAA men's soccer tournament Sunday, winning 2-0.
The Dukes went ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute when a sharp cross from Patrick Innes to Jimmy Simpson went off the foot of a defender and past goalkeeper Michael Lisch. Christian McGlaughlin made the score 2-0 in the 32nd minute, and Wake Forest (8-8-5) couldn't recover.
WFU had just three shots, including a one-on-one that JMU keeper Justin Epperson stopped, and made its earliest NCAA exit since the 2003 season.
UNC men 3, Coastal Carolina 2: North Carolina overcame one-goal deficits twice at home to advance. Enzo Martinez scored the winner, off a free kick in the 69th minute. Ben Speas and Kirk Urso also scored for the Tar Heels, who will play Indiana in the third round.
UNC Charlotte men 3, UAB 1: Evan James, Jennings Rex and J.T. Beaulieu scored goals to lead UNC Charlotte to a second-round win in Birmingham, Ala.
The 49ers (15-4-2) will play defending champion Akron in the third round.
Duke women 2, Ohio State 1: Kelly Cobb and Kaitlyn Kerr scored off Nicole Lipp free kicks Sunday, and Duke rallied at home to reach the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth time in program history. Duke (20-3-1) will play Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Friday in Durham.
Central Florida women 1, UNC 1 (UCF 5-4 PKs): Central Florida won a shootout in Gainesville, Fla., on Sunday, and North Carolina was eliminated in the second round for the second straight season.
UCF's Kristina Turjic and UNC's Crystal Dunn scored in regulation, and the shootout was tied 4-4 after the first five kicks. Bianca Joswiak made her shot in the sudden-death sixth round for UCF, and Aline Reis stopped the final kick by UNC's Ranee Premji.
