Prep Sports Roundup: Mount Airy wins state 1-A tennis title

Team tennis

Mount Airy defeated Durham's North Carolina School of Science and Math by a 5-2 score to win the NCHSAA Class 1-A title in girls dual team tennis Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

The doubles matches were halted when Merry Kesler and Haley Thomas of Mount Airy won at No. 3 to give the Bears the title. Jordan Jackson of Mount Airy, who won at No. 1 singles, took the state 1-A singles championship last weekend.

Mount Airy won its first NCHSAA dual team title and finished the season 26-1. NCSSM suffered its first dual team loss in 19 starts.

Greensboro Grimsley won four of the six singles matches and then took a win at No. 2 doubles to surprise defending champion Raleigh Broughton 5-4 in the 4-A championship on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center. In another close match, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons took two of the three doubles matches after the teams had split singles decisions to score a 5-4 victory over Charlotte Catholic for the 3-A crown. Salisbury rolled to a 5-1 victory over Hillsborough Cedar Ridge for the 2-A championship.

Volleyball

North Stokes defeated Durham's North Carolina School of Science and Math 3-1 to win the NCHSAA Class 1-A volleyball championship on Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.

Senior middle blocker Kierston Garner was named Most Valuable Player, leading North Stokes to a 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory. Garner had five kills, seven digs and seven blocks; Miranda Clary had 12 kills for the Vikings.

Both teams were making their initial appearance in the NCHSAA championships. North Stokes ended the year with a 23-6 record; NCSSM fell to 18-8.

In other finals, Charlotte Providence beat Wilmington Hoggard 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 in the 4-A final, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons swept North Iredell 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 to win the 3-A title, and Newton-Conover downed Elizabeth City Northeastern 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 in the 2-A final.

Soccer

Bishop McGuinness 7, Mount Airy 1: Noah DeAngelo had three goals and an assist to lead Bishop McGuinness past Mount Airy in an NCHSAA 1-A second-round playoff game Saturday in Kernersville.

The Villains (15-8) will play at Elkin in the third round on Wednesday. Elkin beat West Wilkes 1-0 on Saturday.

Southeast Guilford 2, Reynolds 1 (OT): Zach Garrison scored in overtime to lift visiting Southeast Guilford over Reynolds in the second round of the Class 4-A playoffs Saturday.

Reynolds (13-7-2) took a 1-0 lead on Michael Wolfert's goal in the sixth minute.

Goalkeeper Brady Buchanan, who finished with six saves, assisted on Wolfert's goal. SE Guilford tied the game on Christian Torres' goal in the 24th minute.

West Forsyth 2, Grimsley 1: Calvin Saunders had two goals to lead visiting West Forsyth over Greensboro Grimsley in a Class 4-A second-round playoff game Saturday.

Josh Ballard and Warren Marshall had assists for the Titans (19-2-2). West goalkeeper Sean Donahue allowed a goal to Rex Humphries and had six saves.

West will play at Northwest Guilford in the third round. Northwest beat Charlotte Providence on penalty kicks Saturday.

Football

Ragsdale 26, North Davidson 18: Ragsdale held off North Davidson in Jamestown on Saturday night to win a first-round game in the Class 4-A playoffs.

Garrison Herndon competed 7 of 11 passes for 188 yards and two long touchdown passes.

He threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Stewart in the first half and a 72-yard scoring pass to Brandon Walker in the third quarter.

The Tigers advanced to play at Mount Tabor in Friday's second round.

Thomasville 56, Surry Central 26: Thomasville rolled past visiting Surry Central in a Class 2-A first-round game Saturday night.

The Bulldogs will play at home against Wilkes Central in the second round.
