Matt Conway hit a game-tying, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, and then drove home Steven Brooks with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to help Wake Forest defeat North Carolina 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
The Deacons beat the Tar Heels for the second-straight day and improved to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in ACC play. North Carolina dropped to 14-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
Conway tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth on the first pitch he saw from reliever Greg Holt.
With the score still tied at 4-4 in the eighth, Brooks drew a two-out walk to reach first and made it into scoring position by stealing second. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Conway watched two balls go past before he drove a pitch through the right side of the infield to bring home Brooks and give Wake Forest its first lead of the game.
John McLeod allowed a leadoff single to shallow left center by Levi Michael to begin the top of the ninth, but the then got Jacob Stallings to fly out to Brooks in center and Colin Moran to ground into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to get the win and move to 1-0 on the year. Kent Emmanuel (2-1) took the loss for North Carolina.
Wake Forest will next travel to UNC Charlotte on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to host ACC foe Miami in another three-game series next weekend.
Duke 7, N.C. State 1: Dennis O'Grady singled home two runs, and Anthony D'Alessandro hit a three-run homer in Duke's five-run third inning Sunday in the final game of a three-game ACC series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Duke (13-4, 2-1) with the victory, won the series two games to one. N.C. State fell to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
Duke's Marcus Stroman (1-0) gave up five hits and one run in seven innings. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk.
Winston-Salem State 2-8, Chowan 0-1: Winston-Salem state got dominant pitching in Murfreesboro on Sunday to sweep a doubleheader from CIAA rival Chowan.
Brice Rivenbark led the way for WSSU (14-8, 10-2 CIAA) in the first game, pitching a seven-inning, complete-game shutout. Rivenbark gave up just three hits. He struck out 11.
Tyler Hickernell was nearly as good for WSSU in the second game. He gave up an unearned run in the first, but otherwise did not gave up any runs. He gave up two hits in five innings and picked up the win as the Rams rallied for eight runs in the top of the sixth for an 8-1 victory.
Elon 16, Appalachian State 10: A nine-run fourth inning helped Elon to a Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State in Boone on Sunday, completing a three-game series sweep. The win upped Elon's record to 12-5 (3-0 SoCon) while ASU fell to 8-8, 0-6.
Four Phoenix hitters had two-hit performances: Jake Luce (2-for-4, one run, two RBIs), Ryan Kinsella (2-for-3, three runs), Seth Canipe (2-for-5, two runs, four RBIs) and Sebastian Gomez (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs). John Brebbia (2-0) pitched 31/3 innings of relief for Elon.
Zack Briggs went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Appalachian State.
