Greg Holt, a former star at West Forsyth High, will make his second start of the season on the mound tonight for North Carolina.
The stakes could hardly be higher. The Tar Heels will face Vanderbilt in the College World Series at Omaha, Neb., and the loser will be eliminated.
Game time will be 7:10 p.m. on ESPN2.
Vanderbilt (53-11) beat UNC (51-15) in the Series opener Saturday, 7-3.
Holt, a senior right-hander, is 7-1 with a 3.57 ERA in 32 appearances this season, with 66 strikeouts in 58 innings. But all those appearances came in relief except one — a start against Miami in the opening game of the ACC tournament. Holt gave up three runs on six hits in 52/3 innings in that game. He struck out six, walked four and got no decision.
In the College World Series opener against Vanderbilt, Holt pitched 11/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and no runs and striking out two.
Earlier this month, Holt was drafted in the eighth round by Washington.
Vanderbilt's starter will be senior right-hander Taylor Hill, who is 5-1 with a 2.84 ERA. He will be making his 17th start.
