Rachel Stockdale, a former basketball player at N.C. State and assistant at Elon, has been hired as an assistant for the women's program at Wake Forest.
Stockdale, a 2006 graduate of N.C. State, spent the 2007-08 season as the video coordinator for coach Mike Petersen at Wake Forest. She moved on to Elon for three seasons where she helped build a program that went a school-best 20-13 last season.
"Rachel is somebody that is familiar with the league, having played for N.C. State, and she's familiar with the recruiting area," said Petersen, who will begin his eighth season with the Deacons this fall. "She brings a lot of energy, and she really knows how to communicate in regards to recruiting kids out of high school. It's a good fit for us."
Stockdale played at Reynolds and High Point Central high schools and for the late Kay Yow at N.C. State. She was a four-year player at State, was on the ACC all-freshman team, helped the Wolfpack to three NCAA tournament appearances and was a co-captain her senior season in 2005-06.
She played three seasons on the varsity at Reynolds before transferring to High Point Central, where she was part of a state-championship team that went 30-0 in 2001-02. She scored 1,531 career points in high school and was named AP all-state as a senior after averaging 14 points and 4.1 rebounds.
Stockdale, who was mostly a shooting guard in college, will help with the guards, according to Petersen.
"She'll be very good on the floor with our guards, and I think they will really benefit from Rachel's knowledge," Petersen said.
The Deacons are coming off a 15-17 record, including 5-9 in the ACC, and lost one starter, forward Brittany Waters.
"I'm very excited about being back at Wake Forest," Stockdale said. "Growing up in Winston and being on campus a lot and being the video coordinator for that one season, it's exciting and I'm fired up."
One player who is still on the roster from Stockdale's first stint at Wake Forest is fifth-year senior Camille Collier, who missed last season with a torn ACL.
"Camille was here as a freshman when I was here before," Stockdale said, "so I'm looking forward to working with her and the rest of the team."
