Junior Miller, who has won more feature-division races at Bowman Gray Stadium than any other driver, will sit out tonight's Modified race, but he isn't complaining.
Miller said he's glad to be able to say he's doing better after spending Thursday in the hospital for treatment of blood poisoning, the result of being stuck by a fish.
He was fishing at Belews Creek on May 24 when he was pricked between the middle and index fingers of his left hand by the fin of a crappie he had caught. Miller was removing a hook at the time.
"I took it for granted and went on," he said. "I didn't know it was that serious, but the doctor said it was from bacteria on the fish. It got in my blood system, and the doctor said if I hadn't taken care of it when I did, I could have been dead.
"I told the doctor I had been fishing 50 years and been stuck before, but I've never had anything like this."
Miller said he knew he had a problem during last week's races.
"My finger was so stiff I couldn't close it," he said. "That night, after the race, it turned black and swelled up. I went to the doctor, got a shot and he sent me home with some medicine."
Earlier this week, Miller began running a high fever and wound up in the hospital. He returned home to Walnut Cove on Friday.
"It's doing a little better," Miller said. "The doctor thinks medication is going to take care of it. I can't race this week, but hopefully I'll be able to go next week."
