Parkland's Bowman commits to play at WSSU

Miles Bowman, a 6-6 senior forward at Parkland High School, has committed to play at Winston-Salem State.

Bowman said on Sunday night that he was offered a scholarship over the weekend and is looking forward staying close to home to play in college.

“I just liked how their assistant coaches and Coach (Bobby) Collins showed a lot of interest and kept coming to my games,” said Bowman, who averages around 24 points and 13 rebounds a game for the Mustangs. “They’ve got a winning program over there and a lot of seniors who will be leaving so I think it’s a good place for me.”
Bowman said he was also being recruited by several other programs including Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union, Belmont Abby and Davidson.

Because of Bowman’s size he is playing in the post for the Mustangs but will likely play more on the wing in college. He has occasionally shot 3-pointers but says he does most of his work on the inside.

“I post up a lot, that’s my role right now,” Bowman said. “But I can get out there and play on the outside when it’s needed.”

Coach Carlos Mumford of Parkland, a former WSSU player who graduated in 1996, said that Bowman will be a wing or a small forward in college.

“He wanted to commit and felt like Winston would be good for him,” said Mumford, a former player at Glenn who is in his first season as a head coach for the Mustangs. “I guess if a Division I school came around he could change his mind but he’s pretty much set on going there.”

Mumford said that Bowman has a good grade point average and will take his SAT next month.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll qualify so he’ll be able to play right away next year,” Mumford said. “And he wanted to stay close to home. His aunt and uncle are the ones who are raising him and to have that family support next year will be good for him.”

Bowman said he’s already gotten to know Marcus Wells, the Rams’ sophomore point guard pretty well, and he also is aware that William Peay, a former star at Reagan, is a freshman on the Rams this season.

“It’s going to work out for me there and I’m excited,” Bowman said.

Bowman is the second local player to commit to the Rams for next season. Torez Young-Canty, a junior-college transfer who is from Winston-Salem, committed on Jan. 3. Bowman, however, quit the Florida Community College team in Jacksonville, Fla. before the second semester began. Young-Canty, a 6-3 combination guard, was averaging 12 points and seven assists in 13 games.
