Kyrie Irving is making progress in his comeback from a serious toe injury, but Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke is still not counting on his return this season.
Doctors removed the cast from Irving's right foot on Friday. Krzyzewski said after Saturday night's 76-52 win over N.C. State that Irving will undergo tests and examinations in about two weeks to see how his big toe is doing.
"The main thing that we're optimistic about is there's more healing," Krzyzewski said. "You can only get so much healing in a cast, so in the next couple of weeks he'll go through therapy."
Irving, a freshman point guard, hasn't played since suffering the injury on Dec. 4. He has missed the past 15 games.
"We still feel he's not going to play," Krzyzewski said. "We have to go forward with that.
"He's a long way from playing."
Krzyzewski said that Irving would have to be 100 percent healthy to come back, and he is not sure Irving can recover in the time left in the season.
"It's not going to be some miraculous thing that in three weeks he's well," Krzyzewski said. "That's not going to happen."
