Kerry Harbor, the popular strength-and-conditioning coach at Winston-Salem State, has left to become the strength coach at Delaware State.
Harbor, a former assistant strength coach at North Carolina, was part of coach Connell Maynor's football staff the last two seasons as the Rams went 21-3. This past season, the Rams went a school-best 13-1 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
"This is a business and when you have winning seasons, people come after your assistants," Maynor said. "They want people from winning teams and that's why they hire the good assistants from those winning teams."
Maynor said Harbor brought a disciplined style to the players.
"He made a great impact, and those guys were held accountable by him," Maynor said.
Kermit Blount, the head coach at Delaware State, said that he has known Harbor, a former player at N.C. Central, for several years.
Before coming to WSSU, Harbor spent three seasons at North Carolina; before that, he worked at N.C. A&T.
Blount, who went 3-8 in his first season at Delaware State, said his staff didn't have a strength coach last season.
"He's going to bring so much to what we're trying to do in building the program to where we want it to be," Blount said. "If you aren't in good condition and are stronger in that area it doesn't help you on the field on Saturdays. We're very pleased to have him on our staff."
