WCU to hire Speir, Appalachian assistant, as head coach

Mark Speir, an assistant coach at Appalachian State the last two seasons, will be named football coach at Western Carolina on Thursday, according to numerous sources. He will replace Dennis Wagner, who resigned Nov. 13.

Speir has coached a variety of positions at ASU, most recently inside linebackers as well as serving as recruiting coordinator. Speir, a graduate of Clemson, got his master's degree at Western Carolina and was an assistant there for six seasons from 1991 th rough 1996. He is also a former assistant at Presbyterian and Elon.

A media conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Cullowhee.
