Parker Chang led from the front last spring during Reynolds’ run to its first-ever boys tennis championship.
As the Demons cruise through the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference again this year, Chang can be found as high as second and as far down as fourth in the lineup.
Chang was given high praise by coach Brad Fisher of Reynolds for his team-first attitude and willingness to do whatever is asked of him.
“He’s a great teammate,” Fisher said. “The other guys on the team want to be around him.”
Chang was the No. 2 singles player last season when potential disaster hit. Robbie Mudge, the defending 4-A state champion and No. 1 singles player, broke his foot late in the season. In stepped Chang.
“It turned out to be a great experience,” Chang recalled. “I was glad I got to play (No.1). At the beginning it was incredibly nerve-wracking. After a few matches, I got used to it.”
The lessons and tournaments and unending hours on the court — as many as 20 a week at the height of his training — will pay off for Chang when he continues at Washington University in St. Louis, where he plans to pursue a pre-med track.
