l A person familiar with the situation said investigators from the North Carolina Secretary of State's office have subpoenaed defensive tackle Marvin Austin of North Carolina.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is reviewing whether sports-agent laws have been broken. That inquiry comes after an NCAA investigation that focused initially on whether Austin and receiver Greg Little got improper benefits from agents, but has since expanded to include possible academic violations.
Marshall's office has sent out notices to agents asking them not to destroy evidence or documents.
l In another surprising twist to a month-long saga, quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has been cleared to play for Mississippi just one day before the start of the season.
Three days ago, the NCAA ruled that Masoli, a former Oregon quarterback, had to sit out this season after enrolling at Mississippi. But the university appealed that decision and announced yesterday that the NCAA Division I Subcommittee for Legislative Relief had overturned the first ruling.
"We would like to thank the NCAA staff and subcommittee for approaching this case and all of its details with diligence and fairness," Athletics Director Pete Boone said in a released statement.
Masoli is expected to be the starter this season, but sophomore Nathan Stanley might start today against Jacksonville State because of the short notice.
Masoli played for Oregon the past two seasons and led the Ducks to the Rose Bowl in 2009. He was kicked off the team earlier this summer after two run-ins with police; he pleaded guilty to a second-degree burglary charge and was cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession.
l Coach Mark Richt of Georgia suspended freshman safety Alec Ogletree for at least one game yesterday after a misdemeanor theft charge. Richt said in a statement that he's disappointed and that Ogletree will miss today's game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said that his officers had spoken to Ogletree and that he planned to turn himself in.
Williamson said that the warrant stems from a June incident in which a student reported a scooter helmet missing from a student-athlete academic center. Williamson said the helmet was later reported to be in Ogletree's possession. A warrant was issued after an investigation.
Williamson said that Ogletree would be booked on a theft by taking charge and most likely released on bond.
l Senior quarterback Cody Kirby accounted for three touchdowns, Chris Douglas ran for 128 yards and Missouri State routed Eastern Kentucky 31-9 yesterday in Springfield, Mo.
Both teams had to wait an extra day to start their seasons. Lightning delayed the kickoff Thursday night for three hours before officials finally decided to postpone the game.
Kirby finished 15 of 25 for 199 yards passing, including a 28-yard touchdown toss to Jermaine Saffold. Kirby also scored on a pair of short runs for the Bears.
l A Boise State assistant football coach has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and won't make the trip to the Broncos' season opener in the Washington area.
According to the Ada County Sheriff's Department, running backs coach Keith Abu Bhonapha was arrested early yesterday.
Coach Chris Petersen said Bhonapha's arrest was a "personnel matter" and that the team wouldn't comment -- other than to say he wouldn't make the trip.
The third-ranked Broncos play the No. 10 Virginia Tech Hokies at the Washington Redskins' home stadium in Landover, Md., on Monday.
