Dylan Axelrod provided a strong pitching performance and newly called-up Nick Ciolli provided the offense as the Winston-Salem Dash steamrolled the Lynchburg Hillcats 10-2 last night in front of 4,368 at BB&T Ballpark.

Axelrod (8-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Ciolli, called up from low-A Kannapolis on Saturday, was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Dash finished with 13 hits.

"Axelrod was outstanding," said Manager Joe McEwing. "He went out and gave us seven strong, and Raz (Jake Rasner) came in did a great job."

The Dash has won six straight and eight of 10. It has also dominated the Hillcats, going 14-4 against them this season.

"We've been playing very good baseball, probably the last week and a half," McEwing said. "We're putting it all together at the right time. Pitching and defense wins ballgames. We've been getting outstanding pitching."

The Dash scored with two outs in the first off starter Curtis Partch. Jon Gilmore reached on an infield single and Seth Loman lined a single past the third-base bag, allowing Gilmore to score for a 1-0 lead.

Winston-Salem added to its lead in the third. Jose Martinez was hit by a pitch with two outs and stole second. Martinez scored easily when Gilmore doubled to deep right to push the lead to 2-0.

The Dash doubled its lead in the fourth. Ciolli led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Drew Garcia hit his eighth homer of the season, a blast over the right-field wall, to score Ciolli for a 4-0 lead.

The Dash sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth and scored five runs to push the lead to 9-0. Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second when Loman walked. Ciolli followed with a double to drive in Martinez for a 5-0 lead. Loman went to third on the play, and Luis Sierra was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jason Bour the lined a shot of the top of the wall in left for a double, scoring Loman, Ciolli and Sierra for 9-0 lead.

Partch (6-11) pitched 42/3 innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

The third game of the four-game series is scheduled for today at noon. Left-hander Joe Serafin (2-4, 6.70 ERA) will start for the Dash, against right-hander Daniel Guerrero (2-1, 3.34) of the Hillcats.

Note: BB&T Ballpark was named "Ballpark of the Year" by Ballparks.com yesterday. BB&T Ballpark topped Target Field in Minneapolis, Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg, Pa., and PK Park in Eugene, Ore.
