Virginia 4, Wake Forest 0: Michael Shabaz, Jarmere Jenkins and Drew Courtney won their singles matches to lead Virginia past Wake Forest in the second round of the NCAA tournament yesterday in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers (37-1) also won the doubles point.
Three players will represent the Deacons (16-10) at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., May 26-31 -- Steven Forman and Tripper Carleton in singles and the team of Carleton and Iain Atkinson in doubles.
Men's lacrosse
North Carolina 14, Delaware 13: Marcus Holman and Sean DeLaney each scored three goals and North Carolina hung on to beat Delaware in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last night in Chapel Hill.
Thomas Wood, Matt Davie and Chris Layne all had two goals for the Tar Heels, who will play Duke in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday in Princeton, N.J.
UNC took the lead for good on a goal by Holman with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Women's lacrosse
Duke 16, Vanderbilt 15: Lindsay Gilbride scored with one second to play to lift Duke past Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament yesterday in Durham.
The Blue Devils tied the score at 15 on a goal by Sarah Bullard with three minutes left. With 19 seconds left, Duke called a time out to set up its game-winning goal. Bullard then found a cutting Gilbride for the goal.
"It was a play we have in our repertoire that we use,'' Coach Kerstin Kimel of Duke said. "It wasn't executed perfectly, but it was executed enough to get the look we wanted."
Gilbride led all scorers with six points on a season-high five goals and an assist. Bullard had three goals and an assist, Kat Thomas had three goals and Christie Kaestner had two goals and three assists.
Duke advances to the second round and will face Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday.
