NFL Notebook: Dolphins to change tactics

»  Comments | Post a Comment

DOLPHINS: Team owner Stephen Ross said yesterday that Miami will "make improvements" in its player interviewing practices, responding to the fallout from General Manager Jeff Ireland's asking former receiver Dez Bryant if his mother was ever a prostitute.

In a short statement, Ross said Ireland "is well deserving of my continued confidence" and that he considers "the matter closed."

Ireland apologized to Bryant earlier this week after Yahoo! Sports reported that he posed the question during a pre-draft interview.

GIANTS: Punter Jeff Feagles of New York, the oldest active player in the NFL, announced his retirement yesterday after 22 seasons and a league-record 352 consecutive games.

Feagles, 44, signed a contract earlier this month to play another season but changed his mind in the past week after experiencing some physical problems while preparing for next season. He has never missed a game in his career and holds most of the NFL's significant punting records.

The Giants drafted punter Matt Dodge from East Carolina in the seventh round last weekend as an insurance policy. Dodge, who averaged 45.8 yards last season, was the first punter drafted by the Giants since 1997.

VIKINGS: Once again, Brett Favre isn't sure what he wants to do. He told ESPN that he needs surgery on his left ankle in order to play for Minnesota next season and, in an e-mail posted to ESPN.com on Friday, said he's deciding whether to have the procedure or finally retire after 19 seasons.

Favre, who holds all the NFL's major career passing records, will turn 41 in October. He told ESPN the injury that hobbled him three months ago in the NFC championship game still causes swelling and pain and said that orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews told him an operation is unavoidable if he wants to keep playing.

PATRIOTS: The New England Patriots signed eight undrafted rookie free agents, including All-America wrestler John Wise, who is projected as an offensive lineman. Wise played one year of football as a defensive tackle at Western Illinois, then transferred to Illinois and qualified three times for the NCAA championships.

Also signed were: wide receiver Bryan Anderson (Central Michigan); safeties Sergio Brown (Notre Dame) and Ross Ventrone (Villanova); defensive linemen Dane Fletcher (Montana State) and Kyle Love (Mississippi State); cornerback Terrence Johnson (California of Pennsylvania); and running back Pat Paschall (North Dakota State).

JETS: The New York Jets say authorities at Pittsburgh International Airport filed an incident report after wide receiver Santonio Holmes failed to follow flight regulations by not turning off his iPod as the plane he was on from Newark was landing. Holmes got off the plane and police officers reminded him of complying with flight regulations did not charge him.

JAGUARS: Free agent linebacker Freddy Keiaho has signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Keiaho played for four seasons with Indianapolis after entering the NFL as a third-round draft pick in 2006.

Keihaho appeared in 55 games with 27 starts, forcing two fumbles and making one interception for the Colts.
