Wake Forest 4, N.C. State 3 (10): John Stamper scored the winning run on a throwing error and Wake Forest picked up its first ACC win of the season against N.C. State yesterday at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Wake Forest (7-14, 1-5) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning against Russell Wilson (0-1), before Mike Lubanski hit a potential double-play ball to shortstop Matt Bergquist. Chris Diaz took Bergquist's throw and recorded the force at second base, but Diaz's throw to first was wild and allowed Stamper to score the winning run.
Ryan McGrath (1-1) struck out the only batter he faced for the win. Austin Stadler of Wake Forest was sharp in 82/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six.
Matt Conway had two hits and an RBI for the Deacons, and Steven Brooks and Lubanski also had an RBI each.
N.C. State (14-6, 2-) picked up all three of its runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Wake Forest responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI double by Brooks and tied the game in the seventh when Mark Rhine scored on an error.
Florida State 5, North Carolina 3: Brian Busch allowed one hit in six shutout innings of relief as Florida State rallied to edge North Carolina yesterday in Chapel Hill.
Florida State (15-4, 3-3) scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to overcome a 3-1 deficit.
A solo home run by Sherman Johnson and an RBI double by Sean Gilartin tied the game at 3 in the eighth, and two RBI singles in the ninth provided the final margin.
Nick Hazlett hit a three-run double in the second inning to stake the Tar Heels to an early lead.
Nate Striz (0-1) took the loss for North Carolina (15-6, 2-4).
Appalachian State 4, Western Carolina 4 (tie): Yesterday's SoCon series finale between Appalachian State and Western Carolina in Boone ended in a tie because of rain.
Appalachian State (14-3-1, 2-3-1) trailed 4-2 in the fifth inning before former North Forsyth standout Wes Hobson smacked a two-out, two-run homer to right field to tie the game.
The game was played in a steady rain that intensified after the fifth inning, forcing the umpires to call it.
Hobson was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and raised his batting average to .408. Jerod Faggart drove in the Mountaineers' other run.
Western (13-6-1, 1-4-1) was held to three hits.
