Top seeds Chattanooga and Samford took decisive victories yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women's Tournament at Bojangles Coliseum.
No. 1 Chattanooga eliminated No. 9 UNC Greensboro 82-64, and No. 2 Samford eliminated No. 10 Elon 57-38 to advance to Sunday's semifinals. UNCG finished 10-20, and Elon finished 12-19.
In the first quarterfinal, Samford held Elon without a field goal for the final 9:37 and to a season-low 16-percent shooting in the second half. The score was tied 25-25 at halftime, but Samford (21-9) scored the first seven points of the second half. Elon followed with a 7-2 run capped by Lei Lei Hairston's jumper, but Samford went on a 23-6 run to pull away.
Emily London led a balanced Samford attack with 15 points, Savannah Hill grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, and Monica Maxwell (12) and Megan Wilderotter (11) also scored in double figures. Kelsey Evans led Elon with 13 points.
In the second game, Shanara Hollinquest led five Chattanooga players in double figures with 24 points, making 10 of 15 shots and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Tenisha Townsend added 15 points.
Lakiah Hyson led UNCG with 16 points and six rebounds, and Agne Girstautaite had 13 points.
Chattanooga made 12 of 23 shots from 3-point range and shot 54.4 percent from the field.
UNCG trailed by eight at the half and stayed within striking distance until Chattanooga went on a 9-3 run to open an 18-point lead with 5:14 left.
The quarterfinals will continue today, with College of Charleston playing Georgia Southern at 9 a.m., and Appalachian State playing Furman about 11:30.
