Kyle Singler, a junior forward at Duke, injured his right wrist in Sunday night's 90-70 victory over Wake Forest but is probable for Wednesday's game at N.C. State, Coach Mike Krzyzewski said yesterday.
Singler went in for a dunk with about 4½ minutes left and was fouled by Wake Forest's Tony Woods. Singler went down hard on his right side and used his right arm to try to break the fall.
Singler popped right up after the foul, but left his first free throw about three feet short as he winced in pain. He made the next foul shot, but did not shoot the rest of the game and seemed to be favoring the wrist.
Krzyzewski said yesterday that the injury could have been a lot worse.
"He's a really agile and a good athlete," Krzyzewski said.
"He instinctively put his arm out and because of that, he didn't take the full brunt of the fall with his wrist.… He could have broken his wrist."
Singler led Duke with 21 points and 15 rebounds against Wake Forest and is the Blue Devils' leading rebounder (7.8 rpg) and third-leading scorer (15.7 ppg).
Krzyzewski admitted that losing Singler for any length of time would hurt.
"We're not that deep anyway, but if you lose Kyle, you are losing one of the best players in the country," Krzyzewski said.
Krzyzewski said that the preliminary report was good, but that it came right after Sunday's game. "Usually the next morning you find out," Krzyzewski said.
Singler received treatment on the wrist yesterday, according to Duke officials.
