The Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 70-65 to Maryland last night at Joel Coliseum.
Wake Forest is 14-10 and 5-5 in the ACC, while Maryland is 17-8 and 4-6.
Guard Camille Collier of Wake Forest led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Brittany Waters who added 19, including a career-high five 3-point field goals. Secily Ray had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Diandra Tchatchouang led the Terrapins with 17 points and nine rebounds.
The Deacons went ahead 34-31 with 17:51 to play as Waters hit her fifth 3-point basket of the game. The teams exchanged baskets and at 15:21 the score was tied for the fifth and final time at 36-36 on a layup from Tchatchouang.
The Terrapins led by as many as seven points in the final 10 minutes, but Sandra Garcia's layup at the 4-minute mark put the Deacons one point behind at 61-62.
Tchatchaouang followed with a 3-pointer and blocked Garcia's shot attempt to put the Terrapins up 65-61.
A Jackie Nared free throw with 17 seconds to go gave Maryland a two-possession lead (69-65) and Dara Taylor set the final score with a free throw with five seconds to play.
The shooting statistics were close the entire game. Wake Forest shot 34 percent from the field to Maryland's 38 percent and Wake Forest was at 45 percent from the 3-point line to Maryland's 42 percent. Maryland had a 45-41 edge in rebounding, but the game came down to free throws, where Maryland was 21 for 29 and Wake Forest was 7 for 21.
A 3-point basket from Lori Bjork at the end of the first half gave the Terrapins a 29-27 lead.
Wake Forest is headed to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
