Parkland rolls into third round

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Parkland won two matches in Mooresville last night to advance to the third round in the NCHSAA Class 4-A dual team wrestling tournament.

The Mustangs beat Indian Trail Porter Ridge 79-0 in the first round, then downed Mooresville 69-3 in the second round. Parkland, which won three straight Class 3-A titles under Coach Maurice Atwood before moving up to 4-A this season, improved to 39-0.

The Mustangs may face a familiar foe in the third round. They will take on the winner from the first- and second-round matches held at Charlotte Ardrey Kell last night. Greensboro Dudley, which lost to Parkland in the Class 3-A title match last season, wrestled last night at Ardrey Kell, as did West Forsyth and Monroe Sun Valley. Results were not available at press time.

Also yesterday, Surry Central lost a close match to host Newton-Conover, falling 39-36 in the first round of the Class 2-A tournament.

Eight other area teams qualified for the team tournaments: Davie County and Northwest Guilford (4-A); Ashe County, North Surry and Thomasville (2-A); and Alleghany, Bishop McGuinness and 2009 runner-up West Wilkes (1-A).

Notes: The NCHSAA said on its Web site last night that there was a malfunction with its wrestling score-reporting brackets, but that it was fixed after a short delay. Winning teams were to report their scores to the NCHSAA by 6 a.m., today…. The tournaments featured two rounds yesterday in all four classes. Two more rounds in 4-A, 3-A and 2-A to be held Thursday and all four finals Saturday. Class 1-A teams wrestled two rounds last night and will have two more Saturday…. Hosts for Thursday's third-round matches in 4-A, 3-A and 2-A are to be determined as quickly as possible today, the NCHSAA said.
