No. 7 Georgetown 103, No. 2 Villanova 90: On a day when a fierce snowstorm blanketed the nation's capital, Georgetown buried visiting Villanova under a barrage of free throws.
Austin Freeman scored 25 points, Jason Clark had 24, and the Hoyas forced 16 first-half turnovers in a victory yesterday that ended Villanova's 11-game winning streak and ruined the Wildcats' perfect Big East record.
Georgetown (17-5, 7-4) led by as many as 23 points in the first half and 50-31 at halftime. Villanova (20-2, 9-1) cut the margin to 10 but never threatened to complete the comeback.
The Hoyas went 39 or 50 at the free-throw line, led by Greg Monroe, who went 11 of 14 and scored 19 points. Villanova scored only 17 points on 23 free throws.
Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each scored 24 points for the Wildcats, whose winning streak included an 82-77 victory over Georgetown on Jan. 17. Villanova's other loss was to Temple on Dec. 13.
No. 1 Kansas 75, Nebraska 64: Cole Aldrich scored six points during a 16-1 run and Kansas used a big second half last night to beat visiting Nebraska and stretch its home winning streak to 55.
The heavily favored Jayhawks (22-1, 8-0 Big 12) led almost the entire first half but Nebraska charged out after the break on a 10-2 tear and silenced the sellout crowd that had expected a comforting rout following consecutive overtime scares on the road.
Marcus Morris had 20 points as the Jayhawks beat the Huskers (13-10, 1-7) for the 24th time in 25 meetings. Diaz had 20 for Nebraska.
The 55 straight home wins ties the second-best streak for the Jayhawks, who are poised to win their sixth straight Big 12 title.
No. 4 Kentucky 81, LSU 55: DeMarcus Cousins had 17 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth consecutive double-double and visiting Kentucky cruised past LSU yesterday.
The Wildcats (22-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) trailed 6-1 until John Wall hit a jumper 4:29 into the game. They needed only 3 minutes to erase LSU's lead and went on to lead 42-14 at halftime.
LSU (9-14, 0-9) shot less than 19 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 26.7 percent overall (21 of 66).
Bo Spencer, with 10 points, was the only LSU player to score in double figures.
No. 6 West Virginia 79, St. John's 60: Da'Sean Butler scored a season-high 33 points, hitting all seven 3-point attempts, and visiting West Virginia (19-3, 8-2 Big East) rallied past St. John's (12-10, 2-8) yesterday.
The Mountaineers trailed 43-30 more than 4 minutes into the second half before storming into the lead behind a trapping defense and a barrage of 3-pointers.
Oklahoma 80, No. 9 Texas 71: Tommy Mason-Griffin scored 24 points, Cade Davis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the second double-double of his career and Oklahoma (13-9, 4-4 Big 12) beat visiting Texas (19-4, 5-3) yesterday in a game dedicated to the memory of late Sooners star Wayman Tisdale.
The Longhorns cut a 19-point, second-half deficit to five in the final 2 minutes but were hampered the whole game by the same free-throw shooting woes that have been an Achilles' heel all season.
Texas made just 10 of its 27 foul shots and were 4 of 11 in the second half.
Freshman Avery Bradley scored 21 points for Texas, which has lost four of six since being ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history.
No. 10 Kansas State 79, Iowa State 75: Denis Clemente scored a season-high 30 points, including six 3-pointers, and visiting Kansas State (19-4, 6-3) beat Iowa State (13-10, 2-6) yesterday for its fourth straight road win.
Curtis Kelly and Jacob Pullen added 15 points each for the Wildcats, who also extended their winning streak over the Cyclones to eight games dating to 2006.
Craig Brackins had 29 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa State, which lost for the fifth time in six games.
UNLV 88, No. 12 BYU 74: Junior guard Tre'Von Willis had a career-high 33 points to lead UNLV past visiting BYU yesterday and pulled the Runnin' Rebel into a first-place tie with the Cougars in the Mountain West Conference.
UNLV (19-4, 7-2) tied BYU (22-3, 7-2) for the Mountain West Conference lead.
Willis, who had eight assists and five rebounds for the Rebels (19-4, 7-2), scored 21 in the first half.
Jimmer Fredette led the Cougars with 21 points.
No. 14 Tennessee 79, South Carolina 53: Wayne Chism scored a career-high 30 points as Tennessee (18-4, 6-2 SEC) routed visiting South Carolina (13-9, 4-4) last night.
Chism was 11 for 17 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and hit 6 of 8 foul shots. His old high of 27 points came against Auburn last March..
The Vols won their sixth straight over the Gamecocks and ninth in 11 meetings.
No. 15 New Mexico 88, San Diego State 86 (OT): Darington Hobson scored eight of his 29 points in overtime, including two free throws with 2.7 seconds left, to lift New Mexico (21-3, 7-2) to a thrilling win over San Diego State (16-7, 5-4) yesterday.
Hobson added 12 rebounds, and the Lobos won their seventh straight to forge a three-way tie atop the Mountain West standings. After UNLV's 88-74 win over BYU, New Mexico shares first place with the Rebels and Cougars.
No. 16 Wisconsin 62, Michigan 44: Jason Bohannon scored 18 points to lead visiting Wisconsin (18-5, 8-3 Big Ten) past Michigan (11-12, 4-7) on yesterday.
Trevon Hughes had 14 points and Jordan Taylor 13 for the Badgers, who were 9 of 13 from 3-point range in the first half in taking a 40-26 lead.
DeShawn Sims scored 18 points for the Wolverines.
No. 17 Gonzaga 66, Memphis 58: Matt Bouldin scored 19 points and visiting Gonzaga pulled away at the end to beat Memphis yesterday.
Robert Sacre added 13 points and Steven Gray had 12 points and seven rebounds for Gonzaga (19-4).
Wesley Witherspoon led Memphis (16-7) with 26 points.
Georgia 72, No. 18 Vanderbilt 58: Travis Leslie had 13 of his 17 points in the second half and Georgia rallied past visiting Vanderbilt last night.
Georgia (10-11, 2-6 SEC) appeared bound for its fourth straight SEC loss when it trailed 36-28 early in the second half.
The Bulldogs stopped turning over the ball and rallied to give Vanderbilt (17-5, 6-2) its second loss in its last 13 games.
Jermaine Beal led Vanderbilt with 21 points.
Richmond 71, No. 19 Temple 54: Kevin Anderson scored 16 of his 29 points in a blistering first half for Richmond (18-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10) and the Spiders held off visiting Temple (19-5, 7-2) down the stretch yesterday.
Richmond shot 77 percent in the first half against one of the nation's top defensive teams and led by 23 points in the second half. The Spiders withstood a 19-4 burst by Temple and became the first team to surpass its scoring average against the Owls this season.
Lavoy Allen led Temple with 17 points and 19 rebounds.
Texas A&M 78, No. 20 Baylor 71: Bryan Davis had 22 points and B.J. Holmes hit three late 3-point shots as Texas A&M (17-6, 6-3 Big 12) beat visiting Baylor (17-5, 4-4) yesterday.
The Bears led for most of the game until Baylor rallied behind the key 3-pointers by Holmes. LaceDarius Dunn led the Bears with 23 points.
Texas A&M, the Big 12's worst 3-point shooting team, stayed true to form for most of the game, going 4 of 18 from behind the arc.
No. 22 Pittsburgh 83, Seton Hall 58: Gilbert Brown bounced back from a scoreless game with 23 points and Pittsburgh (17-6, 7-4 in Big East) nearly shut out Seton Hall scoring leader Jeremy Hazell in a rout yesterday in Pittsburgh that avenged a loss to the Pirates (12-9, 3-7) less than two weeks ago.
Hazell, the Big East's No. 2 scorer with a 23.0 points per game average, had his second successive subpar game against Pitt with two points on 1-of-7 shooting in 32 minutes after not starting.
No. 23 Butler 74, Wright State 62: Willie Veasley had a career-high 19 points, leading Butler past visiting Wright State last night for its 12th straight win.
Matt Howard finished with 12 points and Gordon Hayward scored 11 for the Bulldogs (20-4, 13-0 Horizon League), who are off to the best conference start in program history.
No. 24 Northern Iowa 55, Southern Illinois 52: Adam Koch scored 11 consecutive points for Northern Iowa (21-2, 12-1 Missouri Valley) down the stretch and the Panthers rallied to beat visiting Southern Illinois (13-10, 5-8) yesterday.
The Panthers improved to 11-0 at home this season with their seventh straight win over the Salukis in Cedar Falls. Koch had 16 of his 21 points in the second half.
No. 25 Mississippi 74, Alabama 67: Chris Warren scored 21 points to help No. 25 Mississippi come back from 19 points down to beat visiting Alabama last night.
Terrence Henry had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Rebels (17-6, 5-4 SEC) who snapped a two-game skid. The Rebels made 22 of 29 free throws in the second half.
