Virginia Tech 70, Clemson 59: Malcolm Delaney tied the Virginia Tech single-game record for free throws by scoring 20 of his 30 points from the foul line and the Hokies used a huge advantage in free throws to beat Clemson yesterday in Blacksburg, Va.
Delaney, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading scorer coming into the game (19.8 points) and an 85-percent free-throw shooter, was 20 for 23 from the line to equal the mark set by Dorenzo Hudson against Seton Hall earlier this season and Terry Penn against The Citadel in 1957.
The Hokies (18-4, 5-3) made 38 of 46 foul shots, season highs in both categories. Clemson went 14 for 21 from the line.
Virginia Tech, 12-0 at home this season, trailed 37-36 with 15:40 remaining but the Hokies went on a 15-4 run to take control of the game. Delaney and Jeff Allen scored five points each in that run and the Tigers got no closer than six the rest of the game.
Allen scored 13 points and Terrell Bell added 10.
Tanner Smith, Jerai Grant and David Potter each scored 11 for the Tigers (16-7, 4-5), who shot a season-worst 30.6 percent (19 for 62) from the floor.
Trevor Booker, who came into the game averaging 15.8 points and 8.6 rebounds for Clemson, finished with seven points and four rebounds.
N.C. A&T 65, Delaware State 54: Robert Johnson shot 6 for 6 from the field and scored 17 points to lead N.C. A&T past Delaware State last night in Greensboro.
Dwane Joshua added 16 points for the Aggies (8-15, 4-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), while Thomas Coleman chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Marcus Neal finished with 16 points on 6 of 17 shooting for the Hornets (11-9, 6-3), and Marques Oliver grabbed 10 rebounds. Delaware State saw a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
A&T shot 56.1 percent from the field (23 for 41), including 57.1 percent from 3-point range (8 for 14).
The Aggies outrebounded Delaware State 37-31.
UNC Charlotte 77, Fordham 72: Derrio Green scored 24 points to lead UNC Charlotte past Fordham yesterday in New York.
Shamari Spears chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the 49ers (18-5, 8-1 Atlantic 10 Conference), who have won their past seven games. An'Juan Wilderness added 13 points.
The 49ers trailed by 10 with 6:59 remaining, but used an 8-0 run to cut the Rams' lead to 59-57 with 5:25 left. A 3-pointer from Green gave UNC Charlotte a 70-68 lead with 2:07 remaining, but Fahro Alihodzic's layup tied the score at 70.
UNC Charlotte went on to shoot 7 for 8 from the free-throw line to secure the win, and Fordham failed to score a field goal in the final minute.
Freshman Chris Gaston finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high six assists to lead the Rams (2-19, 0-9). Fordham has lost 14 straight games, and hasn't won a game since their 93-77 win over Stony Brook on Dec. 8.
Davidson 84, Georgia Southern 74: J.P. Kuhlman scored a career-high 24 points to lead Davidson past visiting Georgia Southern last night.
Kuhlman was 10 for 14 from the free-throw line and Jake Cohen added 18 points as the Wildcats (12-11, 7-4 Southern Conference) won their fourth straight game.
Davidson pulled away in the second half, pushing a five-point lead to 51-43 on Brendan McKillop's 3-pointer with 13:56 to play. Cohen followed with another 3 for a 54-43 advantage to 13:37 left.
Georgia Southern (6-19, 3-9), which is 0-14 on the road this season, cut the lead to 68-62 on Rory Spencer's jumper with 6:19 left, but Davidson scored the next four points and the Eagles didn't threaten again.
McKillop finished with 15 points and Will Archambault added 12 for Davidson.
Willie Powers scored 23 points, Spencer had 18 and Colby Wohlleb added 14 for Georgia Southern.
Coastal Carolina 98, UNC Asheville 62: Joseph Harris had 24 points and nine rebounds and Coastal Carolina cruised past UNC Asheville yesterday in Conway, S.C.
Coastal Carolina used a 22-2 run to break the game open at 36-12 with 6:53 left in the first half en route to a 51-25 halftime lead. The Chanticleers swept the season series, having won 58-57 on Jan. 7.
Coastal Carolina (21-4, 11-2 Big South Conference) has won five of its last six games and remains two games ahead of Winthrop and 21/2 ahead of Radford in the conference standings.
Kierre Greenwood added 16 for the Chanticleers.
Chris Stephenson scored 15 to lead the Bulldogs (10-14, 7-6), who have lost two in a row after winning seven straight.
John Williams blocked a Coastal Carolina shot in the first half to become UNC Asheville's all-time career leader with 191 blocks.
Campbell 64, Florida Gulf Coast 52: Lorne Merthie scored 16 points, leading four Campbell players in double figures, and the Camels beat Florida Gulf Coast yesterday in Fort Myers, Fla.
Miles Taylor added 13 points while Jonathan Rodriguez and Kyle Vejraska chipped in 11 apiece for the Camels (14-9, 9-5 Atlantic Sun Conference), who have won two straight to stay in the hunt in a crowded race for the A-Sun title.
Merthie hit five 3-pointers, Rodriguez hit two and Amir Celestin added another for the Camels, who finished 8 for 17 from beyond the arc (47.1 percent). Brett Williams hit all four of Florida Gulf Coast's 3s as the Eagles ended up 4 for 11 from long range (36.4 percent).
The Camels scored 21 points off of 15 Eagles turnovers, and had an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points.
Williams led the Eagles (7-17, 4-11) with 19 points and Anthony Banks added 15. The Eagles have lost five games in a row.
N.C. Central 65, Savannah State 60: Dwayne Sims scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and N.C. Central snapped a five-game losing streak with a win against Savannah State yesterday in Durham.
C.J. Wilkerson added 13 points and Vincent Davis came off the bench to score 11 for the Eagles (5-20). Sims was 5 of 8 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
The win avenged a two-point overtime loss to the Tigers on Jan. 20.
The Eagles trailed 59-58 with 3:20 left but closed the game on a 7-1 run. Savannah State went the final 3:59 without a field goal, and missed five field goals and four free throws during that stretch.
The game was tight from start to finish as neither team led by more than six points. There were 14 ties and 17 lead changes.
Rashad Hassan led the Tigers (9-14) with 14 points, while Arnold Louis and Tracy Rankins each had 11 and Patrick Hardy added 10.
Wofford 77, UNC Greensboro 59: Kevin Giltner scored 14 points to lead Wofford past UNC Greensboro last night in Spartanburg, S.C.
Junior Salters added 13 points for the Terriers (17-8, 9-3 Southern Conference), who have won four games in a row. Tim Johnson, Noah Dahlman and Jamar Diggs each scored 10 points.
Wofford used an 11-0 run to jump out to a 14-4 lead in the first half, and went on to lead 39-29 at halftime. The Terriers led by double digits for the entire second half, and built their biggest lead at 19 points after a 3-pointer from Giltner made the score 62-43 with 10:14 remaining.
Ben Stywall finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Spartans (5-18, 4-8). Kyle Randall added 10 points.
The Terriers shot 57.7 percent from the field (30 for 52), while UNC Greensboro shot 34.5 percent (19 for 55).
Davidson County CC 93, Oxford (Ky.) College 69: Eric Potts led Davidson County Community College with 18 points, and Robbie Rives finished with 17 points, including 5-of-8 3-pointers, as it defeated Oxford College yesterday in Lexington.
Justin Glover added 15 points for Davidson CC (20-4), Phillip Williams had 13 points and 10 assists, and Zack Williams had 12 points.
Jay Okeke led Oxford (12-10) with 21 points.
