Panthers sign lineman; Cowboys cut Hudgins

»  Comments | Post a Comment

PANTHERS: Carolina found an offensive lineman willing to join the team and signed guard Tim Duckworth yesterday, less than a week after he was waived by New Orleans. Duckworth (6-4, 318) gives the Panthers a maximum 80 players a day before they must trim to 75.

Carolina has had a roster opening since offensive lineman Kirk Barton failed to report last week after he was claimed off waivers from Denver. The Panthers had already waived tackle Jason Capizzi to make room.

COWBOYS: Dallas yesterday released wide receiver Terrell Hudgins and tight end Scott Sicko, who signed as free agents after the draft.

Hudgins, an FCS All-America at Elon, was the nation's leading receiver last season, with an FCS-record 123 catches for a Southern Conference-record 1,633 yards and 16 touchdowns. Sicko created an Internet stir when, after going undrafted, said he was turning down the NFL to continue his education at New Hampshire.

BROWNS: Cleveland expects the NFL to review the play in which rookie Ndamukong Suh of the Detroit Lions grabbed the facemask of quarterback Jake Delhomme and violently threw him to the ground during a preseason game Saturday.

Suh grabbed Delhomme by the facemask, twisted it, threw both arms around Delhomme's head and s pun him to the ground. Suh was assessed a 15-yard penalty.

Coach Eric Mangini of Cleveland said yesterday that he will ask the league to investigate but assumed it would do so anyway. Delhomme said he would leave it up to the league to decide whether a suspension or fine is warranted.

Also, Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown has informed Browns president Mike Holmgren that he will not attend the Sept. 19 ceremony when the team unveils its new ring of honor. Brown, considered the greatest player in team history, is one of 16 Hall of Famers to be inducted in the ring during halftime of the team's home opener.

Brown was an adviser to Browns owner Randy Lerner before he was stripped of his duties by Holmgren, who was hired in December. Brown sent a letter to Holmgren that was obtained by The Plain Dealer. In his letter, Brown said he believes his agreement with Lerner was violated because a clause in it stated he would answer to no one but the owner.

JAGUARS: Pro Bowl running back Maurice Jones-Drew has not had knee surgery, Coach Jack Del Rio said yesterday.

Del Rio squelched the surgery rumors put out by an Internet blog report which said that Jones-Drew had the surgery.

"No," he said. "No, has not happened, is not necessary. He's working, rehabbing, strengthening and gearing up for the regular season."

REDSKINS: Receiver Malcolm Kelly pulled his left hamstring again yesterday, a major setback in his bid to make Washington's opening-day roster, and Donovan McNabb and Clinton Portis remain unable to practice with sprained ankles.

Kelly reinjured the hamstring in his first full practice since the early days of training camp. McNabb again wore a compression stocking on his left leg yesterday as he watched the team's workout. Coach Mike Shanahan said that McNabb and Portis are day to day, but teammates expect both to play in the season opener Sept. 12 against Dallas.

TRADES: Washington and St. Louis swapped 2010 draft picks yesterday, with the Redskins sending sixth-round selection Dennis Morris to the Rams and the Rams sending fifth-round pick Hall Davis to the Redskins, both for conditional, undisclosed picks. Also, Philadelphia traded fullback Charles Scott to Arizona for cornerback Jorrick Calvin, a swap of rookie draft picks.
