6-10 junior is leaving QEA

Quincy Miller, a 6-10 junior and one of the top-rated high-school basketball players in the nation in the Class of 2011, has left Quality Education Academy.

Coach Isaac Pitts of QEA said that although he didn't know where Miller would attend school, he heard that he was transferring to High Point Westchester. Pitts said that since Miller left QEA last week, no school has requested a copy of his transcript.

"I feel fine with it," Pitts said. "Quincy and his parents decided to transfer, and we support him in that he was a part of our family for two years, and we wish him nothing but the best."

Pat Kahny, the athletics director and boys basketball coach at Westchester, was unavailable for comment yesterday.

If Miller enrolls at Westchester, he would team with Deuce Bello and Ike Nwamu, Division I guard prospects also in the Class of 2011.

Pitts said that Miller's transfer is typical of "high-school basketball at the national level."

"It's not like we are mourning a death," Pitts said. "In the scope of high-school basketball nationally, this happens for different reasons. It's not like it's life or death. I am happy for Quincy. We wish him the best. He is part of our family, and we care about him and what happens with him, but we are excited about everything here.

"We will have kids coming in, and they will transfer from places. It's a part of the culture when you play nationally."

Miller, a native of North Chicago, Ill., averaged 25.5 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots last season. Miller said in January that he had Division I scholarship offers from schools across the country, including Duke, Kentucky and Wake Forest.

Attempts to contact Miller yesterday through his uncle, Lamont Taylor, were unsuccessful.

Pitts also said yesterday that Ryan King, a 6-7, 185-pound junior and small forward, has transferred from QEA to Oak Ridge Military Academy.
