Jason Capel is set to become the men's basketball coach at Appalachian State.
Capel, an assistant last season at ASU, has been offered the job and has tentatively accepted it, barring any snags in contract details, according to sources.
He could be officially named coach as early as today.
The ASU head-coaching job came open on Friday when Buzz Peterson left to become the head coach at UNC Wilmington. Peterson, whose second term as ASU's coach lasted just one season, said that he left for a financial offer that basically doubled his salary. The Mountaineers were 24-13 last season. Last season was Capel's first season as a coach.
Capel, 30, played four seasons at North Carolina and graduated in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in communications. As a 6-8 forward, he helped the Tar Heels to a Final Four appearance in 2000, led the Tar Heels in scoring and rebounding his senior season and was twice named All-ACC. Capel went on to play professional basketball in Serbia, Japan and Italy as well as in the NBA's Development League.
He was a college-basketball TV analyst for Raycom Sports in 2007 and 2008 before joining Peterson's staff at ASU, working mostly with the team's post players.
His father, Jeff Capel Jr., is an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats, and is a former coach at Old Dominion, N.C. A&T and Fayetteville State. Jason Capel's brother Jeff Capel is the head coach at Oklahoma and a former Duke player.
Peterson said yesterday that Jamie Kachmarik, an assistant to Peterson last season at ASU, will be on his staff at UNCW but wasn't yet certain about the status of Capel or Matt McMahon, another ASU assistant under Peterson.
