Wake Forest won its fifth ACC Women's Golf Championship in dramatic fashion with a four-stroke victory over Virginia yesterday at the Sedgefield Country Club.
The Deacons finished at 869, with the Cavaliers at 873.
The title was the second in a row for Wake Forest after winning last year at Sedgefield Country Club. The Deacons also won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995.
"I'm so excited I really don't know what to say," Coach Dianne Dailey of Wake Forest said. "The students played so well this afternoon on the back nine. We gave up a lot of shots there on the front nine but they came back and held it together. They really showed what true champions they are."
The individual race was close with freshman Michelle Shin of Wake Forest winning medalist honors with a 2-under-par 211 for a one-stroke victory. Shin is the first freshman to win individual honors since Duke's Amanda Blumenherst won the title in 2006.
"It feels really good. That's about all I can say," Shin said. "I've been playing well for the last few weeks, so it felt really good to play consistently this week and pull it out in the end."
Teammate Cheyenne Woods had a 78 to finish tied for sixth with a 218.
The Deacons started the final round with a 15-shot lead, but Duke and Virginia pulled into a first-place tie at one point before Wake Forest pulled away. Virginia was led by freshman Brittany Altomare and junior Calle Nielson, who tied for second at 1-under-par 212.
Duke was third at 874 and was led by freshmen Lindy Duncan and Stacey Kim, who tied for fourth at 3-over-par 216.
Florida State was fourth at 901, followed by North Carolina, Maryland, N.C. State, Miami and Boston College.
