UNC women top WFU 4-0 in clash of top-10 soccer teams

CHAPEL HILL

No. 1 North Carolina scored two goals in each half to defeat No. 7 Wake Forest 4-0 yesterday at Fetzer Field.

UNC (9-0-1, 2-0) jumped to an early lead with two goals in the first 22 minutes. Ali Hawkins scored the first goal in the 12th minute, and Jessica McDonald scored in the 22nd minute. The Tar Heels padded their lead with goals by Whitney Engen and Alyssa Rich.

Wake Forest, which was shut out for the first time in 2009, was led offensively by Kaley Fountain and Eleanor Davidson, who each attempted two shots.

Laura Morse suffered the loss in goal for Wake Forest (8-2, 0-1), allowing three goals and making three saves in 62:40. Amanda Barasha played the final 27:20, giving up a goal and making a save.

Hannah Daly picked up the victory in net for North Carolina, making one save and not allowing a goal in 83:48. Monica Welsh-Loveman and Amanda Tucker also saw time in goal for the Tar Heels, but had no save chances.

North Carolina held an 18-8 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Tar Heels attempted eight corner kicks; Wake Forest was held without a corner kick.
