■ Safety Junior Petit-Jean of has been suspended from the Wake Forest team for the season for a violation of team policy, Coach Jim Grobe said yesterday.
Grobe said that Petit-Jean, a sophomore from Naples, Fla., will remain in school and on scholarship for this semester.
"I think I'm going to keep him off,'' Grobe said. "I hadn't made up my mind exactly how I was going to deal with it, but he got suspended last year at the start of the season and missed the first couple of games. So I wouldn't see him coming back this season.
"He's a really good kid. Kids just do dumb stuff. They make mistakes. I feel bad for him. But at some point you've got to do what you're supposed to do.''
Junior Alex Frye and sophomore Cyhl Quarles have been starting at safety, with Petit-Jean and sophomore Josh Bush filling backup roles. Grobe said that John Stamper, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, may have an expanded role. He's also mulling over the possibility of playing a first-year freshman, with Daniel Mack being the most likely to be pressed into action.
"It hurts us depthwise,'' Grobe said. "We feel pretty comfortable there, but an injury would really put us in a bad spot. ''

■ Even though Tom Savage handled most of the snaps during practice yesterday, Coach Greg Schiano of Rutgers said he's unsure whether Savage, a freshman, will play or be held out from the lingering effects of a head injury when his team plays at Maryland on Saturday.
Savage suffered the head injury after getting sacked early in the fourth quarter of Rutgers' 23-15 win over Florida International last Saturday. The injury occurred when defensive end Armond Willis landed on his head, according to Savage.
Although Schiano wouldn't confirm whether Savage suffered a concussion on the play, Savage said that the blow to the head "knocked me out cold."
