Brendon Felder, a fast receiver from Monroeville, Pa., found what he was seeking in a college-football program over the weekend and committed to North Carolina.
Felder is a 5-10, 163-pound senior at Gateway High School, where he plays for Coach Terry Smith. He visited UNC for last Saturday's 31-17 win against East Carolina, and had also been offered scholarships by Boston College, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Illinois, Connecticut and Cincinnati.
Smith said that Felder has been timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds.
"Very few kids have the kind of speed that he has," Smith said. "He's very explosive. He's very shifty. He just has another gear that your average player doesn't have."
Felder is UNC's 10th commitment. He can sign the binding National Letter of Intent in February when the NCAA's football signing period will begin.
SuperPrep, a high-school football-recruiting magazine, ranked Felder the No. 23 senior in Pennsylvania in the preseason.
Felder plays receiver, running back and safety for Gateway in his first season in the program. He attended St. John's Prep School in Danvers, Mass., last year. He amassed more than 1,000 yards in all-purpose offense and scored 14 touchdowns as a junior. He had 12 scholarship offers by July.
"They're talking about playing him at slot receiver," Smith said. "With his shiftiness and vertical leaping ability, that's a good fit for him. Like any school, when a kid gets on campus they're going to put him at the best position for the team.
"I always tell our kids, ‘Don't fix your mind on a certain position. Just be open and ready to contribute.'"
