Early goal sparks Cavs past Deacs

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Mike Volk scored in the 24th minute to lead Virginia past Wake Forest 1-0 last night at Spry Stadium.

Neil Barlow was credited with an assist on the play.

Volk's goal was his first of the season and came on a corner kick.

Virginia held a 14-13 advantage in shots on goal.

Virginia (4-1, 1-1) is 32-6-5 overall against Wake Forest (3-1-1, 1-1), which includes a 14-2-2 record in Winston-Salem.

The Deacons honored the memory of Genna Wiley, the late wife of former men's soccer trainer Steve Wiley. The Wake Forest players wore pink uniforms, which were auctioned off during a silent auction while the game was in progress. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the North Carolina Triad of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
