Prep-Football Notebook: Surprising Demons get a lift from Knotts

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Surprising Reynolds issued another bold statement with Friday's 49-14 win at Carver, and senior Craven Knotts was right in the middle of the second-half fireworks.

Knotts scored on a 4-yard run and a 39-yard punt return and connected with Jake Gainey on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second half as Reynolds rattled off 28 unanswered points to win going away. Jermaine Clark had two short touchdown runs in the first half for the Demons.

Ethan Creed and Tre Hayes helped Elkin to a pivotal 35-14 win over East Wilkes in a Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A opener in Ronda.

Creed connected on touchdown passes of 22 yards to Cass Wilkins and 36 and 63 yards to Damon Smith. Hayes scored on runs of 9 and 76 yards and finished with 165 rushing yards.

■ It took a surprising four games for Davie County to land its first win, but the War Eagles finally got it, defeating Charlotte Providence Day on the strength of contributions from several players.

Skeeter Montgomery had 119 yards of total offense and caught one of Jacob Barber's two touchdown passes, and Carson Herndon connected with Joe Watson on a 48-yard touchdown pass. Watson and Darius Wilson had a combined six catches for 129 yards.

Jake Barr scored two touchdowns and passed for another, and Israel Murphy had a big night rushing as Starmount beat Forbush 49-13 in a Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A opener. Barr scored on a 20-yard pass from Nick Kimmer, completed a 51-yard touchdown pass to Kimmer and ran 21 yards for a touchdown. Murphy, who had 121 yards on 11 carries, scored on runs of 24, 4 and 17 yards.

■ Mount Airy cranked up its running game in a 47-22 win over Monroe Parkwood as Luke Wheeler and Andy Temoney scored three touchdowns each. Wheeler, who finished with a game-high 101 yards on eight carries, scored on runs of 35, 19 and 16 yards. Temoney scored on runs of 5, 4 and 1 yards as the Bears (4-0) won their 20th straight.

■ Parkland (1-3) badly needed a win, and Chris Hairston helped out in a 28-15 victory over Atkins. Hairston, a 5-11, 190-pound junior, rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and caught a touchdown pass.

■ Bishop McGuinness (3-0) had a field day in a 49-0 win over South Davidson. Jared Pluciniczak rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, Marty DeFrancesco scored on a 34-yard pass from Josh Rathburn and a 52-yard run, and Thomas Lawler and Raleigh Sadler spearheaded a defense that limited South to 39 total yards.

■ Mount Tabor came up just short in a 24-21 loss to Glenn but still got a big performance from D.J. McCain. He rushed for 139 yards and scored on runs of 50 and 11 yards.

■ Watauga no longer plays in the same conference as Asheville Reynolds, but school officials are taking extra measures to make sure that Friday's game between the two in Boone is a special occasion.

Watauga will wear light blue jerseys, and fans are asked to wear light-blue clothes or dress in clothes from the 1970's, '80's or '90's in a "Retro Night" promotion.

All youth football players and cheerleaders from Watauga County will be admitted free as long as they wear their jerseys or uniforms. In anticipation of a large crowd, a shuttle will be available from the Boone Mall to the stadium, weather permitting.

■ East Davidson is 2-2 after a 16-14 win over Southwestern Randolph, and its safe to say the Eagles needed all of Taylor Warren's help in the victory. Warren had a hand in all 16 of East's points, completing two touchdown passes, kicking an extra point and nailing what turned out to be the winning 29-yard field goal with 5:05 left.
