Duke's recruiting work in North Carolina has netted another commitment -- this one from Issac Blakeney of Monroe High School -- and has allowed the Blue Devils to build on one of their highest totals of in-state players in decades.
Blakeney (6-5, 210) committed late Monday. He also had an offer from East Carolina, Coach Johnny Sowell of Monroe said, and others from Wofford and other FCS programs.
"When you think Duke, you think academics," Sowell said. "When we talked last night, I told him it was a win-win situation. You're going to get the opportunity to play in the ACC and play against some of the top schools in the country, and you're also going to walk away with a degree that says ‘Duke University.' "
Blakeney, Duke's 14th commitment and ninth from North Carolina, plays receiver, defensive back and outside linebacker and also punts. He has been timed at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Sowell said, and he also plays basketball and runs track.
Sowell said that Duke recruited Blakeney as an "athlete" and will determine his best position when he is in the program. Blakeney attended Duke's summer camp and played several positions there.
"He plays all those positions for us, but he spends more time at defensive back," Sowell said. "Some other schools liked him as a receiver, but Duke thinks he can play several positions. He proved to them that he can catch the ball, he can play defensive back and do a lot of different things."
