■ Steelers: Pittsburgh has cut its roster to the 53-man limit without saying who was released.
Coach Mike Tomlin, saying he didn't want other NFL teams to learn in advance who was let go, said the final cuts won't be announced until today.
Among those apparently cut yesterday were fullback Carey Davis, who didn't play in Thursday night's exhibition game win over Carolina; former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a seventh-round pick; and linebacker Bruce Davis, a third-round draft pick last year. Davis started 11 games the last two seasons.
The Steelers may be trying to slide running back Isaac Redman from the active roster to the practice squad. Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State, was the surprise star of training camp and scored three of the Steelers' five touchdowns rushing during the preseason.
■ Vikings: The NFL yesterday fined Minnesota's Brett Favre $10,000 for his crack-back block on Houston's Eugene Wilson in a preseason game.
The league said that Favre hit an opponent below the waist on a run play as he was moving toward the ball carrier. The game last Monday was televised nationally, and the block caused some uproar in Houston and elsewhere around the league. Wilson injured his knee on the play.
■ Saints: Tight end Billy Miller said yesterday that he tore his right Achilles tendon during New Orleans' final preseason game on Thursday night against Miami, likely ending his 10th season before it started.
Miller sustained the injury during the second quarter while running a pass route. He said it felt like someone kicked him in the back of his right foot. When he looked around, no one was there, and he knew it was serious.
Miller said he expects to have surgery as soon as Monday.
PRESEASON GAMES
Texans 27, Buccaneers 20: Rex Grossman, a former Chicago Bears starter, threw two touchdown passes and also produced two field goals, pacing visiting Houston's victory over Tampa Bay last night, possibly winning a backup job behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.
Cowboys 35, Vikings 31: Tarvaris Jackson played well but only attempted four passes, and Sage Rosenfels threw an ugly interception as Minnesota lost to visiting Dallas.
Jackson, Rosenfels and John David Booty are likely competing for two spots behind Brett Favre, with final cuts due today.
Jackson led two touchdown drives and was 2 for 4 for 42 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Dugan.
Rosenfels went 7 for 15 for 115 yards with an interception returned for a touchdown.
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips rested Tony Romo and most of his regular starters, and it showed. Dallas turned over the ball four times, leading to 21 Minnesota points.
