Cross country

NCISAA championships: Calvary Baptist's Scott Morgan won the independent-school's Class 1-A/2-A boys championship yesterday at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro.

Morgan ran the course in a blazing time of 15:30, beating runner-up Bobby Mintz of Cary Christian by 11 seconds. Morgan also beat the time of 15:38 of Cary Academy's Thomas Graham, who won the Class 3-A championship on the same course yesterday.

Fayetteville Academy won the boys 1-A/2-A title. High Point Christian was third, the best finish among area teams in 1-A/2-A. HC's Connor Flater (14th, 17:34) and David Loy (17th, 17:43) had top-20 finishes. Calvary Baptist finished ninth.

Durham Academy won the 3-A boys title. Forsyth Country Day was the top area team in 3-A, finishing eighth. Drew Thompson of High Point Wesleyan had the best finish among area individuals, finishing 11th with a time of 17:07.

In the girls races, Forsyth Country Day had a strong sixth-place team finish in Class 3-A. The Furies were led by Hollis Linjeberger, who was 11th with a time of 20:35. Charlotte Latin won the 3-A team title.

In Class 1-A/2-A, Cary Christian won the girls title.

NCHSAA championships: All four No. 1 singles players from their respective regionals, including freshman Chloe Willetts of Reynolds and defending champ Grace Baker of Charlotte Myers Park, won two matches each yesterday in the NCHSAA 4-A championships at Raleigh's Millbrook Exchange Park.

Baker will play Cary Green Hope's Melissa Kandinata, and Willetts will face Lauren Frazier of Greenville Rose in semifinals at 9 a.m. today, and those winners will play later in the day for the state title. Willetts won her first-round match without losing a game, then defeated Helen Wang of Green Hope 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the quarters. Also in singles, Bia Signori of Reynolds won her first-round match in straight sets but lost 6-1, 6-0 to Kandinata in the quarters.

In Class 1-A, Megan Shelton of East Surry didn't lose a game in two matches yesterday in advancing to the singles final at the Cary Tennis Center. She will play Lori Wang of Raleigh Charter in a matchup of top seeds from the Western and Eastern regionals. In 1-A doubles, the top team from the East, Teresa Pincus and Laura Outlaw of the School of Science and Math, came from a set down in their first match and advanced to play Mount Airy's Ellie Case and Jordan Gwyn, who won twice in straight sets.

In 3-A singles, Tiffany Vanhpraseuth of Ledford won her first-round match before losing in the quarterfinals.

NCISAA semifinals: Top-ranked Charlotte Latin shut out No. 4 Forsyth Country Day 4-0 in a Class 3-A semifinal last night at North Raleigh Christian.

Charlotte Latin (21-1-1) held FCD to five shots on goal. FCD ends its season with a record of 18-7.
